Notes

Toussaint Gelton's painting was strongly influenced by Cornelis Poelenburgh, whose example is here evident in the classically inspired figures and bright, saturated palette. Gelton spent most of his career in Scandinavia, principally in Copenhagen. In 1673 he was appointed court painter to Christian V of Denmark; from 1674-75, he worked in Saxony and then in the region of Heidelberg. The artist died in Copenhagen in 1680.

Most recently, a Crucifixion by Gelton, formerly in the Gustaf Adolf Sparre Collection, was sold London, Sotheby's, December 6, 2007, lot 109 for $35,400.
