A fine image of Truman that captures his self-assurance and strength of character. It is one of five portraits Kempton painted of Truman. She came to his attention via John Snyder. She did a portrait of Snyder's daughter Drucie that was so well received it prompted Drucie's close friend, First Daughter Margaret Truman, to have her own portrait done by the artist. One of Kempton's portraits of Truman became his official White House portrait.
