Notes

Iran was one of the first countries to be captivated by the medium of photography, dating back as far as the 19th century. Photography has flourished in the last twenty years in Iran. For artists it provides useful platform to present their opinions and ideas, often symbolically or metaphorically, without falling foul of the censors. Born in Tehran, Iranian photographer Jalal Sepehr fuses modern and traditional elements in his work both in terms of imagery and narrative. His art encapsulates the notion of conflict between old and new whilst also embodying the artist's respect and affection for his cultural heritage."Let us hope no clouds ever gather over the sunshine world of Jalal Sepehr. His series, ‘Water and Persian Rugs', could be a metaphor for... the entire generation of photographers: speeding over tradition, but always at a respectful distance." (K. Hadidian, ‘zoom in on iran', Canvas, July/August, 2008.)
