Notes

The artists represented were leading members of the "Society of Independent Artists," an avant-garde group based in Odessa in the 1910s. Until recently it was believed that works by the "Independents" (Nezavisimie) had disappeared without trace during the Revolution and Civil War, with only a handful known to exist in the Odessa Art Museum and a few private collections. In 2002, however, it was revealed that an important piece of Odessa's avant-garde heritage had been preserved. In late 1919, during White Army General Anton Denikin's occupation of Odessa, Pereman had shipped his entire iconic collection, assembled over the previous decade, to Palestine. In doing so, he rescued for posterity this unique grouping of early twentieth-century art from the Odessan and Southern Russian schools.
