Patricio Ramos specialized in paintings depicting the Battle of Puebla which took place in Mexico on the fifth of May in 1862 in the city of Puebla. This painting describes the Mexican troops facing off the French army (possibly the Zouave troops.) Initially recruited from Algeria in 1831, the Zouave corps had been part of the French forces since 1833 when they were incorporated into the military by royal decree.
