Notes

Polish-born Uri Shulevitz is one of the most respected of contemporary American picture book artists. He won the Caldecott Medal for The Fool of the World and the Flying Ship (1968) retold by Arthur Ransome; three other titles have been named Caldecott Honor Books. His family fled Poland after Warsaw was bombed, and one of the first books he ever knew as a child was The Wizard of Oz in Russian. Some of the whimsy of Oz is apparent in these delightful creatures executed for a work currently in progress.
