(35.6 x 66.7 cm) painted in 1860 Related works Charles Temple Dix, Gibraltar from the Straits, 1861, Boston Atheneum, No. 238 Charles Temple Dix, Gibraltar, 1866, Yale University Art Gallery After brief studies at Union College, Schenectady, New York, Charles Temple Dix spent three months of the winter of 1857 in the studio of the Philadelphia marine painter Edward Moran. In 1857 he was already living in New York and began to exhibit at the National Academy of Design. In search of marine subjects, he visited Mt. Desert Island, Maine, during the summer of 1859, where he met William Stanley Haseltine and Alfred Thompson Bricher. The same year he also made a voyage to sketch Gibraltar and subsequently applied his knowledge of ships, rigging and the effects of weather upon the water, in this series of paintings.
