Notes

Flannery wrote Miss Kraushaar on April 16, 1945 from Maryland, "I hope to bring along a large panel of Mr. J's farm...it is a landscape with horses...showing his brood mare barn and cottage in a grove of trees. I want you to pass judgment on the panel if you will." Miss Kraushaar replied to Mr. Flannery on May 29, 1945, "Mr. Jeffords was in and likes Kentucky very much. I think he may take it although he has not given up hope of getting some things of the horses and particularly of Man O' War." Kentucky was considered one of Flannery's largest and most ambitious painting's of the time. It was subtitled by the artist Walter Jeffords Mares at the Court of Man O' War which is how the painting has been known since Jeffords' acquisition in 1945.
