Description

Victor Cobb lived in Warragul from 1882 to 1888 before leaving to live in Melbourne. Son of the first registered GP in Warragul, Victor formed life long friendships with his school friends and neighbours and after his return from serving in the Bore War in Southern Africa he made regular visits to Warragul and the Gippsland region. Victor liked to get out of Melbourne into the countryside ‘At Travancore’ 12/10/1937 is one of many pencil sketches Victor made at Travancore estate on the then outskirts of Melbourne, what is now Flemington. Victor’s artist practise was in many respects traditional, it made economic sense. He would produce drawing studies before committing to producing an etching on Copperplate. Sir William Dargie in 1987 noted ‘I remember he was big on the necessity of careful study and drawing as the basis of any etching’. ‘At Travancore, Is a fine example of Victor Cobbs sense of observation and drawing skill. He has captured the air movement through the space of the tree guard using an economy of line and expression.’ Rodney Scherer, 2020. Donated by Rodney Scherer.
