Oil on canvas, 29 x 41 in. (73.8 x 104.2 cm), framed.
Condition: Lined, scattered retouch, stable craquelure.

Provenance: A private Massachusetts collection.

N.B. Victor Eeckhout is listed in Benezit's Dictionnaire des Peintres, Sculpteurs, Dessinateurs et Graveurs as a genre painter and etcher born in Anvers in 1821. Son of the artist Jacob Joseph Eeckhout (1793-1861), Victor likely learned to paint from his father, and he exhibited his paintings in Brussels and Paris. A painter of Orientalist subject matter and genre scenes, he traveled to Morocco where he reportedly stayed for several years. Many of his paintings were inspired by Tangier, where the painting at hand was probably painted and where it is recorded that the artist died. (1)
