Notes

A student of Jean-Charles Nicaise Perrin (1754-1831) and Hubert Robert (1733-1808), Vauzelle exhibited at the Salon between 1799 and 1837. He spent most of his career in Paris, although he travelled through Italy visiting Rome, Pompeii, Milan, Venice and Florence from 1831 to 1837, when he probably executed these and similar views of Rome. A view of the Forum with the Phocas column was exhibited in Paris at Galerie Delestre in 1981; and a watercolour, Pyramid of Caius Cestius, was sold at Drouot, 18 November 2005, lot 116.
