The present lot, although not signed, closely relates to a bust called 'Evangeline' by the American sculptor William Couper (1853-1942), see lot 32 Christie's East, January 12, 1999. The way in which the bodice is tied is different in the present lot, but the general modelling of the clothes, the angle of the head and the facial likeness of the sitter is the same.
