Notes

Daniel Cottier (1838-1891) was apprenticed to John Cairney & Co. in Glasgow at the age of 14, where he learnt the trade of decorating, glass staining and embossing. He later moved to London where he came in contact with the design concepts of the William Morris studio. In 1869 he set up 'Cottier & Co., Art Furniture Makers, Glass and Tile Painters', and his flourishing business enabled him to set up branches in New York and Sydney. He inspired Louis Comfort Tiffany and has been credited with introducing the Aesthetic Movement to America and Australia.
