Item Overview

Description

signed and dated: C Cordier 1893, terracotta, on a modern granite stand

Although the following two lots are signed C Cordier, they are most likely to be by Henri-Louis Cordier, the son of the well known French sculptor Charles Henri Joseph Cordier (1827-1905). Like his father, Henri was interested in ethnography, producing portraits of indegenous people from around the world. Early in his career he exhibited two plaster busts of Eskimos at the Salon in 1878, which are now in the collections of the Anthropology Laboratory of the Musée de l'homme in Paris. Another edition of this Eskimo featured recently in an exhibition of works by his father Charles, see Charles Cordier exhibtion catalogue, p.21, noting the stylistic similarites to the lots offered here.
