Item Overview

Description

Walter L. Greene (1870-1956)
The construction of the Golden Gate Bridge signed and inscribed 'Walter L. Greene/© GENERAL ELECTRIC CO.' (lower left)oil and graphite on canvas26 1/4 x 20 1/4inoverall: 27 1/2 x 21 1/2inPainted circa 1935

The present work depicts the construction of the Golden Gate Bridge from San Francisco looking north toward Marin. Based on historic photographs, the phase of construction dates to between February and March 1935. The nearly-completed Marin Tower stands formidably in the background, and the early construction of the San Francisco Tower is shown in the foreground. The work is as striking for its meticulous detail as it is for its richly saturated color. The bridge's vibrant orange vermillion color is arguably its most defining feature, captured here to great effect.
