Richard was the son of Robert Oliver-Gascoigne (d.1834) and Sarah Shepley. His brother was called Robert Edmund. He lived at Bolton Lodge, Tadcaster, Yorkshire, and estate of 187 acres.

The inclusion of a toy horse and the dark penetrating pupils are devices typical of the work of Walter Stephens Lethbridge.
