Description

"Groom with Pony", kakemono, color on silk, signed by Nangaku and inscribed by Suetaka. The scene depicted is known as a Koma-Muke, an event of the Kamigamo Shrine. Suetaka was the chief priest of the Kamigamo Shrine. It is an old Japanese custom to donate a horse to a shrine and is still practiced today. Ordinary people past and present would give votive tablets bearing a picture of a horse. Image 1'6" x 1'9-3/4". Nangaku was a student of Maruyama Okyo and was a member of Juttetsu, the ten great students of Maruyama. Purchased from David Newman in October 1977; original purchase receipts available.
