Provenance :
• Marie Charlotte Apollonie de Bruges (1802-1893), épouse d’Henri-Michel-Scipion, marquis de la Rochelambert (1789-1863) ;
• Puis par descendance jusqu’à aujourd’hui.

Charles de Prusse (1801-1883) était le troisième fils du roi Frédéric-Guillaume III (1770-1840). La princesse Charles de Prusse (Carl von Preussen), née Marie de Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach (Marie von Sachsen-Weimar-Eisenach) et son époux résidaient, l’été, au Château de Glienicke, à côté de Potsdam, et, l’hiver, au Palais Prinz Karl (ou OrdensPalais), sur la WilhelmPlatz, à Berlin (Fig.1,2). Ces deux demeures avaient été remaniée et décorée, à leurs demandes, par l’architecte Schinkel, en 1826-1827. Tandis qu’il est possible encore de visiter Glienicke, le Palais Prinz Karl, comme l’intégralité des bâtiments qui faisaient de la WilhelmPlatz un des joyeux de Berlin, n’a pas survécu à la guerre.

Une aquarelle d’Eduard Gaertner (fig.3), ainsi qu’une autre, anonyme, datée 1850 (fig.4), récemment présentée sur le marché de l’art allemand (Bassenge, 01/06/2019, lot 6676), présentent ce salon depuis d’autres points de vue. On y voit le même mobilier en bois noir et doré, la superbe vitrine d’angle, ainsi qu’une version de la Judith et Holopherne (1613) de Cristofano Allori (fig.5.) dont l’original est conservé dans les collections royales britanniques.

Issue d’un ensemble de quatre vues d’intérieurs provenant de la comtesse de la Rochelambert, née Apollonie de Bruges (1803-1893), jadis conservées dans un colossal album amicorum constitué par elle, retraçant, à l’aide de souvenirs en tous genres (lettres, télégrammes, portraits en miniatures, dessins, découpages, gravures, images pieuses, photographies, mèches de cheveux, etc.), tous les épisodes de sa vie.


Le destin d’Apollonie de La Rochelambert, née au sein d’une famille monarchiste, émigrée sous la Révolution, viscéralement attachée à la famille royale de France, est caractéristique de ces aristocrates loyaux, ayant connu, dans le cours de ce XIXe siècle tourmenté, les joies des faveurs et les affres des exils, au rythme des changements de régimes.

Apollonie voit le jour à Berlin, où son père, le vicomte de Bruges, a émigré et s’est marié à Henriette, comtesse de Golowkin. De retour à Paris, elle se lie d’amitié avec Aurore Dupin, future Georges Sand, au couvent des Dames Augustines Anglaises, puis elle épouse, en 1822, le marquis de La Rochelambert, commandant de cuirassiers de la Garde Royale et gentilhomme ordinaire de la Chambre du roi Charles X. Le jeune couple vit au domaine de Montretout, à Saint-Cloud, propriété de la famille de la mariée, et leurs enfants ont pour camarade de jeu le duc de Bordeaux.

En 1830, lorsque la Révolution de Juillet porte le duc d’Orléans sur le trône des émeutiers, la famille retourne à Berlin et, très favorablement accueillie à la cour royale, y retrouve des familles alliées et amies ; Potocki, Radziwill, etc.
Apollonie devient une figure appréciée de la belle société berlinoise, fréquentant les Arnim, Bismarck, Manteuffel, Hatzfeld, et se liant d’une amitié profonde avec la princesse Augusta de Prusse (1780-1841).

Le couple La Rochelambert ne retournera en France qu’en 1837. Trois de leurs filles connaîtront d’heureux mariages en devenant respectivement comtesses de Valon, de la Poëze, et de la Bédoyère (puis, en secondes noces, princesse Ney de la Moskowa) et feront de belles « carrières » sous les ors du Second Empire, en devenant dame du Palais de l’Impératrice Eugénie.

Coutau-Bégarie Auction House guarantees the authenticity of attribution of property listed in the catalogue which can be modified by saleroom notices or oral indications given at the time of the sale, recorded in the official sale record.
The correctness of the catalogue or other description of the physical condition, size, quality, rarity, importance, medium, provenance, exhibitions or historical relevance of any property is a statement of opinion only.
Any illustrations in the catalogue are solely for the guidance of prospective buyers and are not to be relied upon in terms of colour or necessarily to reveal imperfections in any lot.

Many lots are of an age or nature which precludes their being in mint condition and some descriptions in the catalogue make reference to damage or restoration. PHONE OR ABSENTEE BIDS
The Auction House will execute absentee bids and accept telephone bids as a courtesy to clients who are unable to attend the auctions.
"Phone or Absentee Bid" forms are available online or from the head office. Therefore, we take no responsibility for any errors or omissions in connection with this service.
For the Phone bid, when the auctioneer is approaching the particular lot number, a staff member will phone and you can instruct them to bid on your behalf.
For the Absentee bid, you must nominate an amount indicating the maximum price you are prepared to pay for the item.
The auctioneer will bid on your behalf until the price has reached your nominated amount.
If bidding doesn't reach this amount, you win the item for the price at which the bidding ceased.
Bulky lots acquired on absentee bids will be kept on Drouot's storage (see the conditions applied).
Small lots will be kept at Coutau-Begarie's office, beyond a week, 3 € per day will be applied.
