Description

Will Rannells, American, Ohio (1891 - 1982), "A Happy Dog," mixed media on paper, signed lower left, measures 9.50 x 9.75 inches to the matt edge, 19 x 17 inches framed. CONDITION: Good. Rannells was an artist known primarily for his paintings of dogs and was a champion and a protector of the species. An Ohio native, he was born in 1892 in Caldwell, and died in 1982 at his home in Westerville. He served for 35 years as Professor of Commercial Art at Ohio State University, retiring in 1961. In 1916 he began painting dogs, rather than girls, and in the 1920s his portraits appeared on the covers of such magazines as Judge, Life, and McCalls. He also illustrated Eldon Roark's book Just a Mutt, published in 1947. Other children's books with his illustrations are Waif, the Story of Spe, Animals Baby Knows, Jack, Jock and Funny, Timmy, and Animal Picture Story Book. His annual dog calendar was produced for over 40 years.
