PROVENANCE

NOTE

The Porto della Legna was a busy mooring point near the Mausoleo di Augusto, used for unloading the city's timber supplies. This view, however, depicts the Tiber in more serene mood, with the boats moored in the distance, and the triumphal gate and gardens of the Villa Altoviti to the left. The area was depicted several times by Gaspar van Wittel, although from a northern viewpoint, as opposed to the southern view used here.
