PROVENANCE

Direktor R. Zahn;
By whom sold, Munich, Hugo Helbing, 22 November 1917, lot 26;
Dr. M. von Andrényi, Munich, 1971, from whom bought by the Herwegs.

LITERATURE

L. Grisebach, Willem Kalf 1619-1693, Berlin 1974, p. 215-216, cat. no. 16, reproduced fig. 12.

NOTE

Famous above all for his later banketjes or 'little banquet pieces' and his pronk still-life paintings, Kalf was earlier in his career a prolific painter of more frugal still-lifes set in the foreground of a kitchen or scullery, or, as in the Herweg picture, in an archway. This picture is one of a few set in an exterior with a landscape beyond. Kalf is recorded as having painted pure landscapes, but none survive today. The copper support is also unusual.

Sold with the certificate of Dr. Walther Bernt, dated 17 March 1971.
