Description

William Aikman (1682-1731): An Oil on Canvas: Portrait of Elizabeth Campbell (c.1677-1758) painted in detail in a feigned oval with an inscription to the upper left hand corner; 'Elizabeth Dau. of John 8th Lord Alphinstone. M. J. Campbell of Mamore, Mother of John IV Duke of Argyle. Na. 1673 Obt. 1758'. 29 1/2 ins x 24 1/2 ins (75 cms x 62 cms), within a gilded 19th century frame 37 1/4 ins x 32 1/4 ins (95 cms x 82 cms) inclusive. [Provenance: By family descent]. The sitter was the daughter of John, 8th Lord Elphinstone (1649-1718) and Isabel Maitland, daughter of Charles 3rd Earl of Lauderdale. Her father fought at Bothwell Bridge in 1679 against the Covenanters and was a staunch supporter in the succession of the Protestant William of Orange. Elizabeth married in 1692 the Hon. John Campbell (1655-1729) M.P. of Dumbarton and son of Archibald, 9th Earl of Argyll. She, in turn, was mother of General Sir John Campbell, 4th Duke of Argyll who was famously painted by Thomas Gainsborough.
