Description

William Crampton-Gore RHA (1871-1946) FRENCH INTERIOR signed on reverse and titled oil on canvas 55 by 44cm., 21.5 by 17.5in. Provenance: Family of the artist William Crampton Gore was the son ofan army officer from Enniskillen, Co. Fermanagh. He studied medicine at Trinity College Dublin, graduating in 1897 and practising until 1901. He gave it up to study painting under Henry Tonks at the Slade School from 1900-1905. From then until 1939 he contributed over a hundred works to the RHA. He was a friend of William Orpen and posed as the doctor in the famous painting A Mere Fracture. In 1916 he was elected an Associate member of the RHA and in 1918 he was made a full member. He was represented at the Belfast Museum and Art Gallery in 1927. He showed a work at the Irish Exhibition at Brussels in 1930. Two works are at the RA in London. IR
