Notes

Dighton was a pupil of William James Muller and later Frederick Goodall, both of whom visited Egypt. He exhibited from 1845 and there are six other examples of the artist's work similar in style and technique at the Victoria and Albert Museum.

His only recorded visit to the Near East was a tour of Egypt, Sinai, Palestine, Lebanon and the Holy Land in 1852
