Notes

William Hannah Clarke settled in the Scottish fishing village of Kirkcudbright in 1915. Set in the undulating hills along the Galloway coast, Kirkcudbright was by then a well established artist's colony presided over by the Glasgow Boy, Edward Atkinson Hornel. The present work shows the influence of Hornel's decorative naturalism and the Japanese parasol is a further playful reference to the artist. Clarke was highly regarded and E.A. Taylor in the Studio of 1916, praised his 'spontaneous figure pastorals', which became a recurring motif in his work.

No VAT will be charged on the hammer price, but VAT at 17.5% will be added to the buyer's premium which is invoiced on a VAT inclusive basis.
