Lot 490: William Henry Hilliard

William Henry Hilliard (American, 1836-1905), "A French Country House with a Figure of a Woman", c. 1882; oil/canvas laid down on board, 23" x 16", signed. Hilliard was active in Indiana in the 1860s-70s, painting primarily landscapes. In the late 1870s, he moved to New York, and eventually settled in Washington, D.C. He painted in Paris from 1880-83, and exhibited at the Paris Salon. It is likely that this work was executed during his trip to France.
