William Lester (1910-1991), "Untitled" oil on board. Board: 24"H x 28"W; Frame: 31.5"H x 35.5"W. Signed verso, "Wm Lester (S.L.)". Lester, a Dallas artist, studied under Alexandre Hogue, Olin Travis and Tom Stell. He graduated from the Dallas Art Institute in 1932. He was one of the celebrated Dallas Nine artists and taught at the Dallas Museum of Fine Art and then at the University of Texas at Austin. He also painted along the Texas Gulf Coast. This painting is a reflection of his time there and the experimental use of color and technique he was acclaimed for. He has been exhibited nationally, and is in the collections of the Dallas Museum of Art, Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, Metropolitan Museum in New York and the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York.
