William Newton Bartholomew (1822-1898) Saxton's River Vermont Watercolor on Paper. In period gilt wood frame under glass. Signed lower left. In frame measures 27"x21"x2". Weight 6 pds. A painter, sketch artist, William Newton Bartholomew was born in Boston, Mass. on Feb. 13, 1822. Bartholomew was a self-taught artist who accompanied a daguerreotyping expedition to California during 1850-51. He made hundreds of daguerreotypes of California and its mining towns, and after returning to Boston, painted a huge panorama made from them, which he exhibited in Boston and other eastern cities. He taught drawing in the public schools of Boston from 1852-71 and wrote drawing books. He died in Newton Center, Mass. in 1898.
