William Payne's familiarity with and admiration for the sea, shown in his pictures, came from his proximity to Plymouth and the dockyards as a young artist.
The present lot depicts the Marine Barracks near Stonehouse. The construction of the barracks commenced in 1781 on land purchased from Lord Edgcumbe. The design followed a model used elsewhere in Britain, notably Chatham, and comprised three accommodation blocks around a parade ground.
