President Kennedy appointed William Walton chair of the Fine Arts Commission from 1961 to 1971, where he worked closely with Jacqueline Kennedy in the presentation of historic Washington, including the restoration of Lafayette Square and the Renwick Gallery, and in the expansion of the National Gallery of Art. Further, Walton influenced the design of Dulles Airport and the Washington Metro System. In 1966 he wrote, The Evidence of Washington, a photographic book chronicling the development of the Nations Capitol.
