Description

William Wightman Ward (1860-1936) AN ARCHIVE OF ORIGINAL WATERCOLOURS, PENCIL DRAWINGS AND ETCHINGS, MAINLY DEPICTING VIEWS IN THE NORTH EAST OF ENGLAND, MOSTLY MOUNTED IN AN ALBUM WITH ANNOTATIONS BY HIS GRANDDAUGHTER NORA WOOD; AND A FRAMED ETCHING various sizes. (qty) Ward was born at North Shields and left school at the age of 12 to support his family following the death of his father. While later working as a painter and decorator, he attended art classes and subsequently maintained a studio above his North Shield's Decorators business. Various local artists, including John Falconar Slater, were regular visitors to his studio and he became an occasional exhibitor at the Bewick Club, Newcastle and at the Artist's of the Northern Counties Exhibitions held at the Laing Art Gallery. Included in this collection is his last ever exhibited work the etching Farmstead near Preston, with its original Laing Art Gallery label verso, which the Artist sent from his home at Tynemouth in 1928.
