Diego was a lay brother of the Franciscans in Spain in the 15th century. Known for his piety, he would often take bread from the monastery's dining table to give to the poor. One day he left with a cloak full of food, and soon after was accused and challenged to open his cloak; miraculously, the loaves of bread had changed into roses. Mission San Diego in southern California is named after this saint.
