---

‘Man o’War (1917-47), was a champion American throughbred racehorse born in Lexington, KY. Bought at the yearling sale in Saratoga in 1918 for $5,000 by Samuel Doyle Riddle from Glen Riddle, MD, Riddle turned down an offer of $400,000 for the horse two years later, by which time ‘Big Red’, as he was nicknamed because his coat had tinges of yellow and gold, had been named as the unofficial 1920 American horse of the year. During his racing career from June 1919 to October 1920 he won 20 of the 21 races for which he was entered, and $249,465 in prize money. Put out to stud in 1922, he sired over 60 subsequent race winners, one of whose offspring was Seabiscuit , the 1938 Horse of the Year
