Notes

Shuho was born in Kyoto. He went to Tokyo and first studied bird-and-flower painting with Ikegami Shuho (1874-1944), then studied beauty painting with Kaburagi Kiyokata (1878-1972) in 1912. He won several prizes in Teiten exhibitions and he was called one of the three most talented pupils of Kiyokata, along with Ito Shinsui (1898-1972) and Terashima Shimei (1892-1975). He continued to offer paintings to Teiten and Shin-Bunten exhibitions. He favored a quiet, classical style with muted palette and traditional kimono patterns.
