Well-known as an art historian, Yu Jianhua famously edited the indispensable comprehensive biographical dictionary of Chinese artists (Zhongguo Meishujia Renming Cidian 中國美術家人名辭典) published posthumously in 1981, and a two volume history of Chinese painting Zhongguo Huihuashi 中國繪畫史 nearly fifty years earlier in 1937.
