Description

ZACHARY TAYLOR
(1784-1850) Twelfth President of the United States, "Old Rough and Ready" was also a hero of the Mexican War, taking Monterrey and defeating Santa Anna. Fine association A.L.S. in the third person, 1p. 8vo., [n.p.], Oct. 4, 1848, in full: "Genl. Taylor presents his respects to Lt. Dent & requests he will dine with him today at 2 o'clock PM". In fair condition with dampstains throughout and a fold split repaired on verso. Sold with a period 10" x 14" hand-colored engraving of Taylor in uniform atop his horse, published by James Baillie, New York. Some foxing. "Lt. Dent" was Frederick Tracy Dent, brother of Julia Dent, who would become First Lady, wife of President Ulysses S. Grant. Dent introduced the pair and later served in the Civil War as a Union General, being brevetted while serving as aide-de-camp to Ulysses S. Grant.
