Item Overview

Description

Mixed technique on cardboard, signed "R. Schmidt-Hamburg" at the lower left. Finely painted view of the Norddeutsche-Lloyd passenger steamship on the occasion of a voyage between Bremen and New York. A snow-covered silhouette of New York in the background, and a pilot vessel in the foreground. In a new, gilded frame under glass, 32 x 42 cm.
Robert Schmidt-Hamburg, along with Willy Stöwer or Hans Bohrdt, one of the best known german maritime painters, was self-educated, and made numerous sea voyages, some as a deckhand, enlisted in the German Imperial Navy at the beginning of World War I and served on the SMS "Lothringen". Because of his great talent, he rapidly became a naval war artist. In his greatest period of productivity between the world wars, he worked, i. a. for Norddeutsche-Lloyd. Although born a Berliner, out of love for Hamburg, he added the city to his name, Schmidt-Hamburg.
