Men's Titanium Rings

A relatively recent discovery, titanium offers a dazzling alternative to other precious metals such as white gold or platinum. Garnering its name from the Latin “titans,” or “first sons of the earth,” titanium was the discovery of English mineralogist William Gregor in 1791.

Several years later, Martin Heinrich Klaproth, a German mineralogist and chemist, also identified the novel metal, this time giving it its name. It was several decades before titanium could be used in any commercial context, in part because it was very difficult to isolate the metal in its pure form. Even later still was its incorporation into jewelry design.

It was not until 1990s that titanium jewelry became widely available, and it is even still nowhere near as prevalent as its precious metal counterparts. This relative rarity, combined with the uncanny hardness of the material, has made titanium rings some of the most coveted jewelry pieces to attain.

Quick Facts

  • Though discovered in the late 18th century, it was not until almost a century later, in 1887, that the first pure specimen of titanium was attained
  • Part of titanium’s popularity stems from the fact that it is hypoallergenic, meaning it is non-toxic for all human wearers, even those who suffer from allergies to other metals
  • Though titanium is incredibly lightweight, it is also remarkably strong. This strength is what makes the creation of titanium jewelry so challenging, as many of the convention methods used for silver and gold will have little to no effect on titanium
