Natural History, Fossils & Minerals - General

Whether it’s the brilliant sparkle of an amethyst geode or the rocky protrusions of a fossilized reptile, the artifacts of natural history are compelling for their role in the historical record and their wonder. Such objects serve as a constant reminder of the amazing feats the planet has prepared over the centuries, and collecting such pieces is part of a tradition that dates back several centuries.

Though human awareness of natural history was burgeoning in the ancient world, the study and focused discovery of these objects gained popularity only as recently as 17th and 18th centuries. This rising interest grew during the age of the Enlightenment when scholars and scientists sought a greater rigor in their experimentation, excavation, and documentation. The result was not only the emergence of new scientific fields, such as paleontology and mineralogy, but also a more global appreciation for the collecting and chronicling of prehistoric and geological artifacts.

Alongside professionals, amateur natural history enthusiasts formed their own personal showcases of their interest and understanding of Earth's history and hugely varied wonders. From the luster of butterfly wings to the seemingly- miraculous occurrence of meteorites falling from the sky, these artifacts proved crucial for both education and enjoyment, and they continue to do so today.
