Necklaces & Pendants - General

The necklace and pendant styles enjoyed today hearken from a vast history dating back to the earliest days of humankind’s existence. The wearing of necklaces stems from the ancient practice of wearing rudimentary charms or talismans simply suspended from one’s neck. These objects, typically made from organic sources, were intended to protect the wearer and to ward off malicious forces.

As time progressed and humans developed more finessed technologies, the elemental nature of early necklaces and pendants began to rapidly transform. More complex good luck charms, for example, emerged in the form of the locket. Ancient cultures also began experimenting with new metals and gems, the desire for which grew exponentially as a symbol of both wealth and beauty.

Royals from the ancient world to the present have enveloped themselves in lavish necklaces and pendants, and it was their demand for finely crafted jewels that, in turn, encouraged the development of some of the most prominent jewelry design houses. This culture of craftsmanship is still today upheld by some of the industry’s biggest names, from Bulgari to Tiffany, making a fine necklace or pendant an ideal investment.
