Tiffany & Co. Rings

Tiffany & Co. can undoubtedly be described as an American icon. The company first opened its doors 1837 in New York City, and became known for its exquisite jewelry as well as the signature tiny blue box in which the jewelry came in. Tiffany & Co. also had a unique way of approaching its customers, and in 1845 it introduced the first mail-order catalogue in U.S. history.

In 1886, the first Tiffany setting was introduced. Up until that point, all diamond rings featured a bezel setting, showing only the top of the stone. The company recognized that diamonds need light in order to truly come to life. It therefore developed a setting in which claws hold the diamond in place, allowing the diamonds to exhibit much more of their fire and scintillation. The Tiffany setting then became a staple in setting gemstones on rings.

One of Tiffany’s leading jewelry designers was Jean Schlumberger, whose designs were often inspired by nature and introduced new materials to the world of jewelry. Paloma Picasso (the daughter of Pablo Picasso), Elsa Peretti, and architect Frank Gehry have also made numerous popular designs for Tiffany. Many Frank Gehry Tiffany rings, in fact, still exist in the company's current collection.
