Woodenware - General

As a readily available material, wood has been widely used to create furniture and domestic objects for millennia. The incredible variety of trees in different geographic locations, as well as the creativity of woodworkers from diverse cultures, has resulted in an extensive range of practical and decorative woodenware.

Although wood deteriorates much more quickly than metal, many ancient wooden objects survive to this day. Excavations of Vikings burial grounds, for example, unearthed intricately carved wooden utensils and decorative medallions, which display the same level of detail and extravagant ornamentation as Norse armor and metalware. Additionally, wood has been essential to the creation of furniture and large-scale works of art used in both private and public interiors. In medieval Europe, Gothic churches were filled with wooden altarpieces, clerical furniture, sculptures, and many other exquisitely carved pieces.

Today, metals and plastics are frequently used to create furniture and domestic objects intended for daily use. However, many people prefer the individuality and craftsmanship of wooden pieces and collect ancient, antique, and modern pieces to accentuate their homes.
