      Ezra Ames Miniature Portrait Albany, New York Of Hon. Alexander Sheldon M.D. With Letter; Late 18th Century; Descended through Mr. Sheldon’s Family. Consigned to Auction by family member, completely all original and unaltered, Oval frame measures 2.75” x 2.25”, original miniature painting, of identified Mr. Alexander Sheldon with blue eyes, back of frame appears to be gold with an oval window displaying locks of hair, accompanying this portrait is a handwritten family letter scribed; Hon. Alexander Sheldon M.D. born in Sheffield Connecticut Oct. 23.1766, Died in Montgomery county New York Sept. 10. 1836, History of his miniature, Delia Sheldon Jacksons Mother was one of my sisters. All of whom were married but one. This maiden aunt at her death left each of her nieces 10 dollars, Delia who was then a girl did not know what to do with her money, but at last decided to have her father’s miniature taken. So she persuaded him to go to Albany and have it taken by an artist by name of Ames. This miniature is in a gold case, on the back of it is her father’s hair with is grey, and her husband’s mothers hair which is dark. The last statement is not certain but is true as near as she can remember. The miniature is now in her possession This Account was taken from her own life, March 14.1886, Galesburg Illinois, Portrait after close inspection is in original condition and has very minor loose particles behind glass above head, overall condition is outstanding and original, This is the first time this miniature has ever been offered to the public, Bid with Confidence!       Paulding (1770-1854), a native of Philipsburgh, now Tarrytown, served as Mayor of New York City from 1824-1826. Watercolor on ivory, 2 1/2 x 2 1/8 inches. In a rectangular gilt-metal pendant case with cast foliate rim.Literature: A virtually identical, but smaller, version of this miniature was sold at Christie's New York, June 22, 1994, lot 147.
