Measurements: 39 x 31 cm; 44 x 36 cm (frame). Painter, draftsman, engraver, sculptor, decorator and set designer, Mariano Andreu began in the art world attracted by the plastic arts of the spectacle. Mainly self-taught, he sporadically attended Francesc A. Galí's academy. He studied in London at the Municipal School of Arts & Crafts, where he was fascinated by the style of Aubrey Beardsley and by Pre-Raphaelite painting. On his return to Barcelona he joined the Decadentist group, the first manifestation of Noucentisme. In 1911 Andreu exhibited his work for the first time in a group exhibition organized at the Faianç Català. The following year he settled in Paris, a city where he was always a great success with critics and the public, although he returned intermittently to Barcelona. Later he travels to Italy to study the works of the Renaissance, a fact that will definitively mark his work. Destacado miembro del movimiento Noucentista, Mariano Andreu fué denominado por Eugenio D'Ors como "la perla de los artistas" por su exquisito gusto, delicadeza y virtuosismo en distintas disciplinas artísticas. Entre los años 1920 y 1935, vivió en París y su obra se expuso en sucesivas ediciones del Salón de Otoño. Procedencia: Edmund Peel & Asociados, Subasta de arte moderno e impresionista. Mariano ANDREU (1888-1976) "Femme à la guitare" - 1923 Huile sur toile Signée en bas à gauche et datée (19)23, titrée au dos et marquée n°2 130 x 103 cm Exposition: 16eme Salon d'Automne (1er novembre au 16 décembre 1923), n°36 du catalogue. Historique : Peintre espagnol installé à Paris au début des années 20, Mariano Andreu se spécialise dans les décors et costumes de théâtre, réalisant des œuvres pour Louis Jouvet et les Ballets Russes. À partir des années 50, il part à Londres sur l'invitation de John Gielgud pour réaliser décors et costumes pour des pièces de Shakespeare et Berlioz. C'est en 1923 que Mariano Andreu exécute cette œuvre représentant une femme à la guitare, figure féminine que l'on retrouve la même année dans "Le concert". (voir reproduction ci-contre) En 1925, la galerie Le Portique lui consacre une exposition et le catalogue fait mention d'une "Femme à la guitare", preuve de la récurrence de ce thème dans son œuvre.
