    • PETER ANGELIS Dunkirk, France (1685) / Rennes, France (1734) "A courtship in the tavern"
      May. 21, 2024

PETER ANGELIS Dunkirk, France (1685) / Rennes, France (1734) "A courtship in the tavern"

      Est: €4,500 - €6,000

Oil on canvas. Peter Angelis was a prestigious French painter, who developed most of his activity in the first third of the 18th century. His training was very eclectic due to the numerous countries in which he resided, soaking up different styles. After initial training in Dunkirk, his hometown, he moved on to Antwerp where he was appointed master of the Guild of St. Luke. Later he traveled to Dusseldorf and then to England and Rome, places where his work aroused great interest and admiration. In fact, he wanted to settle permanently in England; but in Rennes, the demand for his works reached such an extreme that he decided to stay, dying in this city in French Brittany in the year 1734. His paintings, as we can see in this canvas that represents A Courtship in the Tavern, present a great influence of the models that appear in Teniers' typical scenes, full of a multitude of characters that reflect different aspects of daily life. However, Teniers' entire universe is filtered by the influence of Antoine Watteau's painting, giving this canvas the friendly tone that the works of this French painter possess. His works are impregnated with an idyllic and bucolic tone in which scenes of courtship and entertainment predominate; a theme and style that was assimilated perfectly by Peter Angelis as can be seen in this beautiful and delicate painting. We thank Mr. Martin Eidelberg for his help in cataloging this lot. Measurements: 48 x 64 cm.

      PIETER ANGILLIS?

      Est: €2,000 - €3,000

Walpole, Aneddotes of painting in England...raccolti dal compianto George Vertue, 4 (1771), (1780)- Vertue, Notebooks, Walpole Society, vol. 3). Bibliografia di riferimento: G. • Angellis, Pieter: Aufbruch eines Edelmanns zu einer Mission
      Nov. 26, 2020

Angellis, Pieter: Aufbruch eines Edelmanns zu einer Mission

      Est: €6,000 - €8,000

Aufbruch eines Edelmanns zu einer Mission. Öl auf Leinwand, doubliert. 50,3 x 57,8 cm. Jahrhunderts an. The Works of Horatio Walpole, Earl of Oxford, London 1798, S. 206). - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalogue.
