    • James Archer, RSA,  Scottish 1823-1904-  Portrait sketch of a young girl,
      Jul. 09, 2024

James Archer, RSA,  Scottish 1823-1904-  Portrait sketch of a young girl,

      Est: £250 - £350

James Archer, RSA,  Scottish 1823-1904-  Portrait sketch of a young girl, seated, half-length, her blonde hair loose;  oil on board, feigned tondo, signed with monogram and dated '1867' (lower right), 24.7 x 23.1 cm.  Provenance:  By repute, the family of Frank Holl (1845-1888).  Private Collection, UK.  Note:  Archer was best known for his romanticised depictions of literary and historical scenes, typically set in the dramatic landscape of his native Scotland. Children often feature in Archer's paintings, imbuing his compositions with a sense of innocence and sweetness which is particularly evident in his painting of a young girl and her dog which sold at Sotheby's, Perthshire, on 1 September 2004 (lot 623) for £48,000.  The present work is thought to have come from the family of Frank Holl, an artist who engraved a number of Archer's works, and the sitter was anecdotally believed to depict one of Holl's daughters.

MERLIN AND LANCELOT, AN INCIDENT FROM LA MORTE D'ARTHUR MERLIN AND LANCELOT, AN INCIDENT FROM LA MORTE D'ARTHUR 58.5x102cm.; 23x40in. signed with monogram and dated 71 oil on canvas NOTE Tennyson's retelling of Malory's tales from La Morte d'Arthur, published in 1842 had re-awakened interest in the romances and inspired many artists. Archer painted several depictions of incidents from the series of tales of King Arthur's court, exhibited at the Royal Academy in the 1860s at the height of the popularity for the stories. The first and most famous of the series, entitled La Morte d'Arthur of 1861 (Manchester City Art Gallery), depicts the last moments of the King attended by his treacherous sister Morgan le Fay, Queen Guinevere and the Lady of the Lake. In the following year Archer exhibited King Arthur Obtains the Mystic Sword Excalibur and in 1868 painted another composition The Sancgreall, King Arthur Healed of his Grievous Wound (Christie's, 23 November 2005, lot 27). The present picture, which does not appear to have been exhibited, depicts Merlin leading the knight Lancelot back to Camelot following his unsuccessful quest to attain the Grail.

LITERATURE A Book of Love, London, 1996, p. 64, illus. p. 17. EXHIBITION Art in Scotland 1800-1920, 1980. 32 Victorian Paintings from the Forbes Magazine Collection, 1981. NOTES Although painted circa 1881 by which time he was living in London, Archer looks back to his Scottish history and takes an incident in the life of Scotland's most celebrated poet Robert Burns (1759-1796) as the subject for this painting. Burns' great love was Jean Armour, the daughter of a master-mason, whom he eventually married. Their courtship, however, was tempestuous and in the spring of 1786, after Jean had destroyed the document that testified to their commitment to marry upon discovering she was pregnant by him, she was sent off to Paisley to stay with relatives and avoid scandal. Burns went into hiding and turned for consolation to another girl, Mary Campbell, whom he called his 'Highland Mary'. She was a dairymaid at Coilsfield, an estate near the village of Mauchline in Ayrshire. Despite meeting at Failford on 14 May 1786 and pledging to marry, the episode came to nothing as Mary died of a fever at Greenock shortly afterwards. This subject is also treated by W.H. Midwood in 1864 in which Burns exchanged Bibles with 'Highland Mary' over a running stream at Failford - a Scottish custom which signified betrothal (fig. 1). In the present picture a Bible can be seen in the cap on the ground beneath Burns' feet and the river Ayr is behind the couple. The two-volume Bible Burns gave Mary Campbell is preserved in the Burns' Museum at Alloway. There is a monument on the banks of the Fail Burn that marks this event and bears the verse from Burns' poem To Mary in Heaven written by Burns around the third anniversary of Mary Campbell's death 'That sacred hour can I forget, Can I forget the hallow'd grove, Where, by the winding Ayr we met, To live one day of parting love?'.
