Ruth Asawa Untitled (Tied-Wire) c. 1975 tied steel wire 17 dia in (43 cm) This tied-wire sculpture, dating to the mid-1970s, originates from the collection of Maria 'Mitzi' Kolisch, artist, activist, scientist and friend of the artist. During the 1950s and 60s, Kolisch's home in the Diamond Heights neighborhood of San Francisco was a gathering place for artists and creatives, frequented by Asawa, Imogen Cunningham, George Gershwin and Bucky Fuller, among others. Further, Kolisch was married to Otto Seligman, a prominent gallerist who notably exhibited two of Asawa's tied-wire sculptures at his Seattle gallery in 1965. Upon Kolisch's passing in 1987, the artwork was inherited by their son, Mischa Seligman, who displayed the sculpture hanging from an eave outside his home in Santa Barbara. It remained in the family for over 40 years and has never been publicly offered for sale. In 2022, the current owner and his wife acquired the sculpture from Seligman's estate and initiated extensive professional conservation. This sculpture is not registered with Ruth Asawa Lanier, Inc. and is not included in the artist's catalog raisonne. We wish to thank Asawa Lanier, Inc. for their assistance.
