Portrait the gift of her uncle John Read', and 'The artist was Thomas Barber R.A. b. in Nottingham 1768 & died there 1843. Exhibited 12 portraits at the Royal Academy between 1810 & 1829.         Thomas Barber, British 1768-1843- Portrait of The Rt Hon Sir James Wigram, Vice Chavcellor, (1793-1866), half-length in a black coat and white stock; oil on canvas, 75.2x63.5cm Provenance: Sotheby's, London, 10th November, 1993, lot 151 Note: The sitter was the third son of Sir Robert Wigram, 1st Bt. of Wexford. He was a Fellow of Trinity College Cambridge and became Tory MP to Leominster in 1841. He was a member of Lincoln's Inn, and from 1841-1850 he was Vice-Chancellor in the Court of Chancery. He was knighted in 1842. In 1818, he married Anne, younger daughter of Richard Arkwright of Willersley Castle, Derbyshire.

        Thomas Barber [1768-1843]- Portrait of Reverend Henry Leonard Adams [b.1798] bust length:- signed, inscribed and dated 1838 on the reverse oil on canvas 59 x 49cm, together with a portrait attributed to Barber of Captain James Scott [b.1793] [2] * Notes. Captain James Scott commanded the brigantine 'Britain's Pride' of the Wilson Line. On one voyage he rescued the Crown Prince of Portugal from drowning in the river Tagus, for which he was rewarded with a ring.

        full-length, standing in a landscape wearing navy velvet suits, playing with bows and arrows oil on canvas Thomas Barber was a pupil of Sir Thomas Lawrence, and set up a portrait practice in Derby (returning to his native Nottingham only late in his life). In addition to portraits, Barber painted landscapes and even occassionally history pictures. An Agony in the Garden was commissioned for the church of Saint Peter's, Nottingham in 1815/16, still in situ. He exhibited sporadically in the Royal Academy from 1810 to 1829.
