Basoli (Antonio, 1774-1848) Design for the walls and ceiling of a room', pen and brown ink, watercolour, traces of pencil under-drawing, on wove paper without watermark, ruled brown ink borderline, numbered '2[?]7' in the upper right margin, 370 x 490 mm (14 1/2 x 19 1/4 in), under glass, affixed onto mount with old tape verso, some signs of surface dirt and minor toning, framed, [1821] Provenance: Collection of John and Eileen Harris Exhibited: The Age of Neo-classicism, Arts Council, Royal Academy and V&A, 9th Sept - 19th Nov 1972, cat. no. 1564 *** An exceptionally fine example, possibly one of Basoli's theatrical stage designs. Antonio worked as a set designer and as a decorator for numerous theatres in Bologna and its environs, including the Marsigli Rossi Theater, the Teatro Comunale di Bologna, and, in particular, the Contavalli Theater. Born in Casetl Huelfo, Basoli's first teacher was his father, Lelio Andrea Basoli. His education was motivated by an insatiable and constant interest in classic art, classic and contemporary literature, and the works, decorations and inscriptions of Giovanni Battista Piranesi. Basoli often worked alongside his brothers, Francesco and Luigi Basoli, and in 1804 he became Professor at the Accademia delle Arti di Bologna until 1826. During his time at the Accademia he developed a close friendship with fellow pupils Domenico Corsini and Pelagio Palagi, and later worked for a time in the studio of Petronio Fancelli.

La maggior parte delle tavole presenta un'iscrizione manoscritta di antica mano nel margine inferiore bianco, le carte sono in ottimo stato conservativo, frescamente impresse e marginose. Legatura ottocentesca in mezza pelle con piatti in percallina e titoli in oro al dorso. Mancanze lungo le cerniere. Sguardie in carta decorata. (1)

Berliner Ornamentstichsammlung 4165, Millard IV, 15, Brunet I, 692, Ebert 1752. Antonio Basoli zählt zu den genialsten und produktivsten italienischen Theatermalern und Bühnenarchitekten der ersten Hälfte des Ottocento. Nach einer profunden Ausbildung an der Accademia Clementina in Bologna - zu seinen Lehrern zählten Gaetano und Mauro Gandolfi, Angelo Venturoli und Vincenzo Mazzi - erhielt Basoli 1793, noch vor dem Abschluss des Studiums, eine Anstellung als Szenograph am Teatro Taruffi in Bologna. Bereits in seinem Frühwerk vollzog sich der Bruch mit der barocken Tradition Bibienas und eine Hinwendung zum Neoklassizismus. Die vorliegende umfangreiche Sammlung von Bühnenentwürfen vermittelt einen repräsentativen Überblick über Basolis künstlerische Produktion bis zum Jahre 1810 und legt ein markantes Zeugnis von seiner erstaunlichen Phantasie und überbordenden schöpferischen Gestaltungskraft ab. Die ausführliche Widmung auf der Titelseite besagt, dass der Sammelband Lernzwecken dienen sollte und als künstlerisches Anschauungsmaterial gedacht war. Bei der Umsetzung seiner Bühnenentwürfe in druckgraphische Nachbildungen bediente Basoli sich einer eindrucksvollen Schar von Mitarbeitern, unter ihnen sein Bruder Luigi und namhafte Reproduktionsstecher wie Francesco Cocchi, Gaetano Sandri und Giulio Tomba. Die einzelnen Blätter tragen Widmungen an befreundete Kollegen und Lehrer der Bologneser Akademie wie Francesco Rosaspina, Felice Giani und Pelagio Palagi. Was bei der Betrachtung des Sammelbandes sofort auffällt, ist das bunte Sammelsurium unterschiedlichster Stilrichtungen, derer Basoli sich bedient. Diese Neigung zum Eklektizismus und zur Utopie ist kennzeichnend für die Zeit um 1800. - Ausgezeichnete Drucke mit dem vollen Rand. Das Titelblatt etwas fleckig und angestaubt, die übrigen Blätter geringfügig fleckig und mit leichten Altersspuren, der Gesamteindruck jedoch sehr gut. - Wir bitten darum, Zustandsberichte zu den Losen zu erfragen, da der Erhaltungszustand nur in Ausnahmefällen im Katalog angegeben ist. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalogue.

Antonio Basoli. Raccolta di nove scene teatrali. 1821 Nove Stampe di circa 264x370 mm, entro cornici coeve di 329x 435 mm. Tavole incise all'acquatinta e ritoccate a a mano in seppia e biacca. Buono stato di conservazione. Splendida serie di nove tavole di scenografie di raffinato gusto neoclassico, disegnate dal Basoli e finemente incise e ombreggiate a modo di acquarello dai suoi fratelli Luigi e Francesco. Antonio Basoli fu il piu' grande scenografo dell'Ottocento: allievo dell'Accademia Clementina, fu epigono di Bibiena, da cui trasse senz'altro il gusto per una scenografia 'angolare' nonche' un'indiscussa perizia nelle composizioni prospettiche; fu celebrato commediografo nel Teatro Comunale di Bologna, opera dello stesso Bibiena.

Nach einer profunden Ausbildung an der Accademia Clementina in Bologna - zu seinen Lehrern zählten Gaetano und Mauro Gandolfi, Angelo Venturoli und Vincenzo Mazzi - erhielt Basoli 1793, noch vor dem Abschluß des Studiums, eine Anstellung als Szenograph am Teatro Taruffi in Bologna. Bereits in seinem Frühwerk vollzog sich der Bruch mit der barocken Tradition Bibienas und eine Hinwendung zum Neoklassizismus. Die vorliegende umfangreiche Sammlung von Bühnenentwürfen vermittelt einen repräsentativen Überblick über Basolis künstlerische Produktion bis zum Jahre 1810 und legt ein markantes Zeugnis von seiner erstaunlichen Phantasie und überbordenden schöpferischen Gestaltungskraft ab. Die ausführliche Widmung auf der Titelseite besagt, daß der Sammelband Lernzwecken dienen sollte und als künstlerisches Anschauungsmaterial gedacht war. Bei der Umsetzung seiner Bühnenentwürfe in druckgraphische Nachbildungen bediente Basoli sich einer eindrucksvollen Schar von Mitarbeitern, unter ihnen sein Bruder Luigi und namhafte Reproduktionsstecher wie Francesco Cocchi, Gaetano Sandri und Giulio Tomba. Die einzelnen Blätter tragen Widmungen an befreundete Kollegen und Lehrer der Bologneser Akademie wie Francesco Rosaspina, Felice Giani und Pelagio Palagi. Was bei der Betrachtung des Sammelbandes sofort auffällt, ist das bunte Sammelsurium unterschiedlichster Stilrichtungen, derer Basolis sich bedient. Diese Neigung zum Eklektizismus und zur Utopie ist kennzeichnend für die Zeit um 1800. Ausgezeichnete Drucke mit dem vollen Rand. Das Titelblatt etwas fleckig und angestaubt, die übrigen Blätter geringfügig fleckig und mit leichten Altersspuren, der Gesamteindruck jedoch sehr gut.

BLUMENSTILLEBEN MIT VOGELNEST Aquarell auf Papier. 62 x 46,5 cm. Verglast und gerahmt. In gedämpften, ins Graue ziehenden, zarten Farbtönen aufgefasstes Blumenstilleben mit Darstellung eines hoch auftürmenden Blumenstraußes in einer kugeligen Vase mit eingezogenem Fuß auf einer Marmorplatte. Nach oben hin zieht eine gefüllte Mohnblume, flankiert von Blättern und einer Knospe, daneben blaue Kornblumen, die ins freie Feld links oben ragen. Darunter geöffnete, weiße bzw. zartrosafarbene Rosenblüten neben Primeln und Ackerblüten. Am Fuß der Vase ein Vogelnest mit Gelege. Der Hintergrund grau gehalten, am Rand der Tischplatte alte Nummerierung "32". Einige Knickfalten, seitlicher Einriss.
