    Suite of 12 illustrations for Frog and Water Shrew , gouache, watercolor, crayon and pastel, 235 x 380 mm each, signed "Pauline Baynes" lower right, with tissue overlays showing text placement and other production markings (one lacking). Published: Frog and Water Shrew by Helen Piers (Harmondsworth: Kestrel Books, 1981), endpapers and 11 interior double-page spreads. Baynes was from Brighton and studied at the Farnham School of Art and the Slade School of Art until WWII. She drew naval charts for the Hydrographic Department of British Admiralty, where she met many established illustrators who inspired and encouraged her. Although she illustrated over 90 books for various author, she is best known for her illustrations of the works of C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien.

    Baynes (Pauline, 1922-2008). Battle of Otterburn & Battle of Ivery , a pair of illustrations for A Dictionary of Chivalry, by Grant Uden, pub. Longmans, 1968, together two gouache and watercolour illustrations, one showing armoured knights in battle with a castle in the background, the other showing mounted knights with lances in a forest, both signed in pencil, both 210 x 55 mm (8.25 x 2.25 ins), framed and glazed together with double-apertured mount, frame with ms. label on verso in Baynes s hand detailing the book for which the illustrations were produced and signed by her, and printed exhibition label for the Ashgate Gallery, Farnham, Surrey, dated July 1975. Although best known for her Narnia illustrations, Pauline Baynes was a prolific book artist, and arguably one of the greatest illstrators of the 20th century. Amongst other subjects, Baynes illustrated many medieval tales, all of which show her painstaking research into the detailing of period costume and architecture, and her passion for recreating the texture and fabric of daily life in different ages. Her greatest triumph in this genre were her almost 600 illustrations embellishing the margins of A Dictionary of Chivalry , a two-year labour that deservedly earned her the coveted Kate Greenaway Medal.
